Quinta adivinanza.
The third riddle. It has been written by the auxiliary teacher of conversation, Ryan
I'm standing on a street with French balconies all around me. The sound of jazz music is floating through open windows and all the people are wearing crazy costumes. This time of year, people throw necklaces of colorful beads at each other. The tradition comes from a time when the city was French territory. Everything in this city has a French influence! Some people speak a form of French called creole (pronounced "cree- ol"). And the food is delicious! I can smell crawfish gumbo, shrimp etouffee, chicory coffee, and fresh beignets! All the seafood comes from the Mississippi river which runs right through the middle of the city and empties into the gulf of Mexico. The entire city is below sea level, so hurricanes are a great danger to this place. In fact, a very powerful hurricane struck in 2005 and nearly destroyed the entire city! Can you guess the place I'm talking about?

In the Greek language, the name of this absolutely marvelous church means “divine wisdom.” With its impressive
dome, this landmark is the fourth largest cathedral in the world. It was first built in the year 537 A.D. Over the years,
several earthquakes have caused severe damage to the building. Its famous dome has been rebuilt more than once.
This church is one of the best examples in the world of Byzantine architecture. The 40 windows at the dome’s base
make it look like the dome is floating over the church. The church is loved for its beautiful mosaics and its marble
pillars too. Today, this famous church is a museum. In the streets nearby the church, a number of people are selling
tulips -- beautiful tulips in shades of red, yellow and pink. When most people think of tulips, they think of The
Netherlands, but did you know that tulips originated in this area? By the way, if it helps you figure out where I am, the
city I am visiting is the only city in the world that is located on two different continents!

I have on my scuba gear, and I’m about to take a dive to see the world’s largest coral reef. This reef stretches about
1,250 miles in the Coral Sea. (That distance is about the same as the distance from New York City to Miami, Florida!)
This amazing undersea “park” is home to 1,500 species of fish, 400 species of coral, and 500 species of seaweed. It is
also home to the largest population of dugongs in the world. In case you don’t know what a dugong is, its closest
relative is the manatee. My diving buddy told me that this wonderful reef is said to be the only living thing that can be
seen from outer space. The first European to see this reef was English explorer Captain James Cook. Cook happened
to find the reef when his wooden ship, the Endeavour, ran aground on it in 1770. Sadly, this site is endangered by
pollution, climate change, and humans who drop boat anchors on the fragile coral. Sunscreen lotions from tourists (I’m
not wearing any today) and ship fuels are also endangering this wonderful place.
